GreenLoop IT Solutions today announced LoopGuard | BrowserGuard, a new browser protection service that blocks phishing pages, credential-harvesting sites, and scareware notification attacks before they reach the user. BrowserGuard is included at no additional charge for GreenLoop managed services clients.

BrowserGuard is the newest component of LoopGuard for Endpoint, GreenLoop’s proprietary suite of endpoint security and hardening tools, which our own technicians deploy and monitor. It takes the browser protections already described in LoopGuard for Endpoint, extends them, and runs them as one centrally managed service that is always on.

Why we built it

We have hardened our client environments against email phishing and trained client users to spot and report suspicious email links, and attackers have changed their methods in response. Over recent months, GreenLoop’s service desk has seen more notification-based and browser scareware attacks. These fake “virus alert” pop-ups push users toward fraudulent support phone numbers or toward convincing Microsoft 365 sign-in pages built to collect passwords. Antivirus software does not stop a user from typing a password into a page that looks correct, so we added a control that blocks the page itself.

“Our clients’ users are trained and careful, and they still get caught, because a fake Microsoft sign-in page looks the same as the real one at a glance,” said Stephen Moody, Chief Technology Officer at GreenLoop IT Solutions. “BrowserGuard moves that decision from the user to policy. We block the page before anyone has to make a judgment call. We see this as an essential protection for every client, so we are including it in our service plans now and going forward instead of selling it as an add-on.”

What BrowserGuard does

• It blocks phishing and malicious sites in real time. Every site a user visits is checked as it loads, and known phishing, credential-harvesting, and malware-delivery pages are blocked. Fake Microsoft 365 sign-in pages are a particular focus.
• It extends Microsoft Defender browser protection to Chrome. Defender’s protection is built into Microsoft Edge. BrowserGuard deploys and configures the same protection for every Google Chrome profile on managed computers, so coverage is consistent in either browser.
• It restricts browser notifications. Browser notifications are limited by policy. This stops the notification-spam and scareware pop-up campaigns that cause a steady stream of help desk calls and, occasionally, real compromises.
• It is centrally enforced and tamper-resistant. Protections are applied by policy to managed workstations and laptops, so users cannot uninstall or disable them. GreenLoop maintains a central allowlist approved by our CTO, plus per-client allowlist additions for business applications that need notifications or unusual sites.
• It works wherever the device goes. BrowserGuard protects a corporate-owned computer on any network it connects to, including the office, a client site, an airport, or a home network.

Availability and rollout

BrowserGuard is included with GreenLoop managed services at no additional charge. Rollout is phased:

• Managed Security Premium and Managed Security Enterprise clients will receive BrowserGuard first.
• Managed Security Plus and Managed Security Essentials clients will follow in the months after, as the rollout expands.

Clients do not need to take any action. GreenLoop deploys, configures, and monitors BrowserGuard centrally, and we will contact each client’s designated point of contact before deployment. If a specific computer or application needs an exception, GreenLoop can allowlist the site or exclude the device on request. Clients with questions before then can contact their GreenLoop Account Manager.
